The Ins and Outs of Breast Implants

You’re thinking about breast augmentation. Maybe you’re ready for a change, or maybe you're just doing your homework. Either way, understanding the full landscape of implant options is the best place to start. And you’ve come to the right place. From teardrops to gummy bears, we’re breaking down the features, feels, and facts of breast implants so you can make confident, informed decisions about what’s best for your body and yourself.

Let’s get into it.

Saline implants: classic and customizable

Saline implants have been FDA-approved for decades and are available to clients age 18 and older.

What they are: A silicone shell filled with sterile saltwater, after insertion. That means smaller incisions and easier adjustments to correct asymmetry.

Placement: Over-the-muscle works well if you have more natural tissue (and usually means less downtime). Under-the-muscle tends to look more natural, especially if you want to avoid the "round" look.

Size matters: Implant volume is measured in cubic centimeters (CCs). For example, 300cc typically increases breast size by about two cups, while 600cc offers a more dramatic transformation.

Rupture awareness: In the rare event of a rupture, saline implants deflate quickly, making it easy to spot. The saline is safely absorbed by the body, but regular scans after the 10-year mark are recommended by the FDA to monitor their condition.

Pros:

  • More affordable than silicone
  • Easier to detect if they rupture (they deflate quickly and harmlessly)
  • Adjustable volume (measured in cubic centimeters or "CCs")
  • Great for fixing uneven breasts

Cons:

  • Slightly firmer feel
  • Higher chance of visible rippling (especially in clients with less natural tissue)

Silicone implants: Hello, gummy bears

Silicone implants, especially the “gummy bear” kind, are the most popular implants in the U.S.

What they are: A silicone casing filled with cohesive silicone gel that mimics the density of natural breast tissue. Thanks to their thick, pliable gel, these implants are often nicknamed "gummy bear implants." The consistency allows the implant to maintain its shape while offering a natural feel.

FDA-approved and trusted: These implants are FDA-approved for clients 22 and older and boast a strong safety profile. Even in the rare event of a rupture, the cohesive gel typically remains in place.

Why clients love them:

  • Ultra-natural look and feel
  • Lower rupture risk than earlier silicone versions
  • Less rippling
  • Longer-lasting than saline

Bonus: If a rupture happens (rare), the gel typically holds its shape and doesn’t leak.

Teardrop implants: Sculpted and sophisticated

We could cry over the beautiful results that Teardrop implants give. A type of silicone implant, Teardrops create breasts with a gentle slope, fuller at the bottom, and slimmer at the top. Think: a subtle, anatomical silhouette that complements your body’s natural curves.

Custom Fit: Available in a range of sizes, profiles, and projections, teardrop implants are perfect for clients wanting a tailored result that aligns with their body’s specific proportions.

Customizable across:

  • Sizes
  • Profiles (how far they project from the chest wall)
  • Textures (often mildly textured to prevent rotation)

Why they're trending today:

  • Customized fit for different body types
  • More natural-looking result compared to round implants
  • Reduced risk of shifting or rotation

A quick guide to profiles, placement, and texture

Your breast augmentation results aren’t just defined by what’s inside the implant, but by how it’s shaped, placed, and textured. These three design elements work together to influence everything from your new shape to your post-op experience.

Shape is a big deal—as you now know
Round implants are a go-to for those seeking fullness at the top of the breast and a more pronounced cleavage. They’re symmetrical in all directions, making them versatile and less prone to issues if they rotate. On the other hand, teardrop implants give a softer, subtler enhancement that closely mimics the shape of unaugmented breasts.

Texture influences movement and stability
Smooth implants have a sleek exterior that allows for more natural movement within the breast pocket, ideal if you want a soft, fluid feel. Textured implants, meanwhile, are engineered to stay in place. Their slightly rough surface helps anchor them in surrounding tissue, reducing the risk of rotation, especially important with teardrop shapes, where orientation impacts appearance.

Placement affects both look and recovery
Subglandular placement, meaning over the chest muscle but under the natural breast tissue, typically involves a quicker recovery and easier adjustments, but can be more visible in leaner clients. Submuscular placement, under both breast tissue and chest muscle, generally yields a more natural appearance, especially for those with less existing volume, though it may come with a slightly longer recovery period.
