Breast Augmentation Consultation: What to Expect

If you’re wondering what to expect at a breast augmentation consultation, you’ve come to the right place. A consultation is where your goals meet a surgeon’s expertise, and it’s how you turn inspiration into a safe, personalized plan. Read on to know exactly what will happen, what to prepare, and the right questions to ask so you leave confident and in control.

What’s a Breast Augmentation Consultation?

A breast augmentation consultation is an in-person or virtual appointment where a board-certified plastic surgeon (or their care team) evaluates your anatomy, listens to your goals, explains options, and outlines the risks, benefits, and next steps. Expect measurements, a medical-history review, and a customized recommendation.

*With Bliss, we make sure your consultation with a board-certified match is customized to you and not a one-size-fits-all sales pitch.

Virtual Consultations vs. In-Person

Virtual consults are excellent for initial screening, photo review, and discussing goals — and they’re convenient if you’re traveling to consult with different surgeons. An in-person visit is usually necessary for final sizing, physical measurements, and implant sizer sessions. Many practices combine both: start virtual, finish in-office.

Who Will Be in the Room?

Whether it’s the initial consult or you’ve traveled to have a second or third with your surgeon in person, usually you’ll meet:

  • A patient coordinator (who walks you through logistics and financing).
  • The plastic surgeon for examination, measurements, and surgical planning.
  • Sometimes, a nurse or counselor for aftercare and consent details.
  • If you bring a partner or friend for support, that’s totally fine; just let the team know at booking.

What the Surgeon Will Say and Ask

During the consultation, your surgeon will:

  • Review your medical history and medications (including allergies and bleeding-risk meds).
  • Examine and measure breasts (size, shape, skin quality, nipple position).
  • Take pre-op photos for your chart.
  • Recommend implant type, size range, incision options, and implant placement (over vs. under the muscle).
  • Explain risks and recovery expectations.

What Should You Bring and Prepare?

Bring:

  • A list of medications and supplements.
  • Any past surgical records or implant info (if you already have implants).
  • Photos of results you like (saved from trustworthy sources).
  • A list of questions (see the checklist below).

Prepare by thinking about:

  • Desired fullness and profile (how you want clothes/swimsuits to fit).
  • Lifestyle needs (athlete? breastfeeding plans?).
  • Budget and time off for recovery.

The Easy Checklist: Questions to Ask

Use this at the consult:

  • Are you board-certified in plastic surgery? Where do you have hospital privileges?
  • How many breast augmentations have you performed? Can I see before-and-after photos of patients like me?
  • Which implant type and size would you recommend and why? (saline vs. silicone vs. highly cohesive “gummy bear”)
  • What incision and placement will you use, and what scars should I expect?
  • Where will my surgery be performed, and is the facility accredited?
  • What are the risks specific to my case (capsular contracture, rupture, BIA-ALCL, etc.), and how often do you see them?
  • What is the recovery timeline, and what follow-up care is included?

Asking these questions keeps the conversation clinical and gives you real data to compare surgeons.

Implant Types and Safety

Broadly, implants are:

  • Saline: filled with sterile salt water; if they leak, the implant deflates.
  • Silicone gel: feels more natural; leaks may be “silent,” so follow-up imaging is recommended.
  • Highly cohesive (“gummy bear”): form-stable silicone that keeps its shape even if the shell is damaged.

Important safety note: regulators continue to monitor rare but serious issues. For example, breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). The FDA and other authorities publish ongoing safety updates; your surgeon should discuss these risks and the latest recommendations with you.

After the Consultation: What Happens Next?

Typical next steps:

  • Review the written surgical plan and cost estimate.
  • Schedule any pre-op testing (bloodwork, mammogram if recommended).
  • Book your surgery date and review pre-op instructions (medications, smoking cessation).
  • Arrange recovery logistics, including transport home and time off work.
